Optical Coherence Tomography

Today was an exciting day. My equipment arrived to my office. Pretty standard stuff like an exam chair, vision monitor and a bunch of other little stuff. What was really exciting was getting the optical coherence tomography (OCT). This machine lets me scan the entire retina for any signs of disease or abnormalities. Even though Im the only retina specialist in Frisco many eye doctors now have this machine which allows them to screen and catch diseases early. This particular OCT is a Maestro model from Topcon, I chose this one because its super easy to use. In fact I got a video of it on our instagram @lonestarretina of me doing it on myself. The patient rests their chin on the machine and the camera finds the eye on its own. It also takes a picture of the retina at the same time in additional to the scan of all the layers of the retina. OCT has made is much easier to monitor and diagnose retina diseases like diabetic retinopathy, age related macular degeneratio, branch and centeal retinal vein occulsions and other retinal diseases.
